Update: Barclay Secondary School Opening Deferred - Due to Planning

The Lion Academy Trust is disappointed to announce that the Secretary of State for Schools, Lord Nash, has elected to defer the opening of the much needed Barclay Secondary School for 12 months. This decision is based solely on the perceived planning risk – and is a temporary delay to the school opening. Justin James, CEO of the Lion Academy Trust, said: “I am deeply sorry to make this announcement and fully appreciate the impact this will have on the hundreds of families who elected to make Barclay Secondary School their first choice for their children’s journey into the secondary phase. To those parents who wanted to be a part of the new school – I can only express my shared disappointment this outcome – which is due to planning challenges around our new site. Rest assured – this is a temporary set-back and we, along with the Department of Education, remain 100% committed to getting this school open as soon as possible.”

Work to submit the full planning application is being progressed and the Trust team will continue to develop the overall offer the school will provide once open. The decision to defer the project was made by the DfE  to ensure that the timing of opening of the school was in the best interests of parents and students, given the current uncertainty about the planning application outcomes.

Christopher Stark, Project Manager said “It’s a difficult set-back to accept given the amazing site and what this sizable investment in the local area will bring. I look forward to the school opening and for the transformation of the area and education offer continuing to develop. I am really sorry to have to let parents and students down like this, but the decision was not ours to make. We are firmly on track to resolve the issues standing between us and opening and will be making further announcements shortly.”

The Trust and Department are now working through a revised programme for opening and will publish this as soon as we are able.
