The Lion Academy Trust is delighted to announce that its flagship school, Barclay Primary School, has been judged “Outstanding” in all categories by Ofsted.
The inspection took place on 15-16 March 2016 and comprised of 7 inspectors examining every aspect of teaching and learning and how the school operates.
Justin James, Executive Principal of Barclay Primary and CEO of the Lion Academy Trust said:
“I am so proud of the pupils who were amazing ambassadors for the school and for how we structure learning around them. I am also delighted for staff and leaders who work tirelessly to make this the best possible school it can be. It is wonderful recognition that our relentless focus on assessment proficiency and our ‘no excuses’ culture has resulted in this judgement. I’d like to especially thank the parents who took the time to speak to the Ofsted team directly or via the Parent Portal – their views and support for the school is further validation of how we are working with them and making Barclay Primary School a truly community focussed centre of excellence in Waltham Forest.”
Barclay Primary School operates across two sites in the Borough of Waltham Forest and currently serves 1,200 (growing to 1,600 on-roll) children and their families. As one of the largest primary schools nationally, serving a hugely complex and diverse community, the outstanding Ofsted judgement reflects a culture and approach which prioritises targeting learning to each child’s needs and ensuring that every learner can confidently discuss their own learning needs and pathways.
Robin Thompson-Clarke, Chair of the Barclay parental advisory body said:
“It’s nothing less than the hard work and focus the team put in each and every day deserved. It’s not about performing for Ofsted during the inspection, its about building a culture of excellence which places learning at the centre of what we do and making sure we measure and assess the impact of every decision around how it positively supports teaching and learning. We do not, and have never, accepted context as an excuse – every child deserves the best start in life and here at Barclay Primary, the governors and team are pushing this agenda to meet the needs of every one of our pupils.”
The inspection report highlights:
As a result of the high expectations of pupils’ behaviour, the school community runs smoothly. Pupils behave maturely without the need to be reminded or rewarded;
Pupils’ attitudes to learning are exemplary. Their determination to achieve their very best is promoted and supported exceptionally well by the school’s work; and
Parents spoken to had high praise for the school’s work. They describe the many strengths as including regular homework, reading being well taught, children being safe and secure, and an engaging curriculum.
The Barclay Secondary Free School will open in September 2017 as demand from parents to be able to continue their children’s learning journey in this type of setting has been overwhelming. A fabulous site has been secured in Waltham Forest for the new school – for more details, please see www.barclaysfs.net
